For more than three decades, Cafe Batavia has stood among Jakarta's most iconic dining destinations. As shifting habits, the pandemic, and changing tourism patterns tested its relevance, GAEA stepped in as an embedded marketing partner — evolving the brand through strategic repositioning, cultural programming, and a renewed dining experience, without losing its historic soul.
Challenge
Cafe Batavia has been part of Jakarta’s cultural landscape since 1993. But by 2021, the hospitality industry was emerging from the disruption of COVID-19, tourism patterns had shifted, and guest expectations were changing. The challenge was not simply attracting more visitors; it was keeping one of Indonesia’s most iconic restaurants relevant to a new generation while preserving the heritage that made it legendary.
Approach
Rather than treating Cafe Batavia as a campaign, GAEA approached it as a living institution. The strategy evolved the brand without compromising its identity: repositioning toward a more accessible casual-dining experience, strengthening cultural relevance through year-round programming, and creating new reasons for guests to return beyond the historic location itself. Every decision balanced heritage with modern hospitality.
The work
Over a four-year embedded partnership, GAEA functioned as Cafe Batavia’s marketing department. The engagement spanned a casual-dining repositioning, a bar-programme overhaul, cultural-calendar development, photography and content production, communications planning, and the creation of the Voyage Book. The defining chapter was the 30th Anniversary — an integrated campaign celebrating three decades through storytelling, events, content, and guest engagement.
Outcome
Cafe Batavia navigated a period of industry-wide change while strengthening its place as one of Jakarta’s most enduring hospitality brands. The partnership ran four continuous years (2021–2025) and became GAEA’s largest client relationship — Rp 400M+ in lifetime billings. The brand entered its fourth decade with renewed relevance, a refreshed guest experience, and a landmark 30th-Anniversary celebration that honoured its past while positioning it for the future.
